The chest as a whole is mysterious and interesting. The deep, rich patina with the different shades of green from the various layers of paint, the shape of the arches in the central panels and the accentuation of the pattern in muted shades of red are inspiring. The chest is further enhanced by the wonderful scale carving in the central panels, carvings on the outer edges, the lid and a crossbar. If you stroke the carving, it feels soft and velvety to the touch. The iron hinges, lock and key have been created with the same vigor and attention to detail. Notice the hearts in the hinges. The iron handles on the sides lie in a small painted field – also a fine building block.
