my trilogy: summer – reading – travelling
Since I love being in the mountains, I leaf through my books “Häuser in den Bergen”, “Mountain Interiors” and “Die schönsten Bauernhöfe in den Alpen”. The articles have taken me to some incredible places. The book “Der Attersee” satisfies my longing for a summer retreat by the lake.
Of course, the weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT is a must. Not only because my son Gabriel publishes in it, but also because I regularly come across reports that enrich my life.
Tomorrow I’m going to the sea, so in addition to my tent and hammock, I need to pack a few novels.
I immediately took up Gabriel’s recommendation: “The Friend” by Sigrid Nunez. The fact that the author is a New Yorker and the novel is set in NYC are two big plus points for me. The name of this city always resonates with me. I lived there for two years in the mid-90s. I also like the voice of The New York Times Book Review: “There is something uplifting about Nunez’s writing, her direct and decisive style, the musicality of her sentences, and her worldly intelligence are delightful.”
Then I discovered Julia Schoch in the bookstore. I like that she has written a trilogy. I’m starting with the first book, “Das Vorkommnis”. The trilogy tells the story of a woman’s life. Perhaps I will feel the same way as I did with Zeruya Shalev, whose trilogy I devoured many years ago. When I like a book, I like to immerse myself in it and read another by the same author.
I recently heard Daniel Glattauer’s novel “Gut gegen Nordwind” on Ö1. It was read wonderfully, and the nuances of the story thrilled me all over again. It’s been a long time since I saw the play at the Schauspielhaus Graz. It was a fantastic performance! The revival of this story prompted me to get Glattauer’s book “In einem Zug”.
I would be very happy if you would share your book recommendations with me.
