This small folk art chest from the first quarter of the 18th century is richly carved and painted. As the colors are muted and the patina has a dampening effect, its true splendor becomes apparent upon closer inspection. The front of the small chest is divided into two main sections and several smaller sections. The round arches in the large sections are architecturally constructed with pilasters, cornices, and frames. All sections feature painting and/or carving. In the spandrels, pilasters, and frames, we find scale carving or flame moldings. Even the front edges of the chest and the all-around molding of the lid have been decorated with delicate carving. In the smallest panel in the middle, we find the year of origin, 1722. How appealing! The frame construction is evident in the panels on the lid and sides. The profiled moldings emphasize the construction and are indicative of the early 18th century, as is the simply contoured base. This small farmhouse chest is a real gem!
