wardrobe in late baroque

In terms of art history, this softwood wardrobe is a prime example of the transition from Baroque to Classicism. The type of cornice and panelling are indicative of the Baroque period – but both are elegant rather than opulent as in the High Baroque. The slender shape of the body, the pilasters on the pilaster strips and the shape of the key leaves and feet can be attributed to classicism. Pilasters were even applied to the rear edge of the side walls. The term ‘bone baroque’ is due to the shape of the panelling. The wardrobe at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries is an elegant design in its entirety. If I wanted to label a piece of furniture as ‘pretty’, then this bone baroque wardrobe really deserves it.
