A painted bench is a rare piece of furniture—especially painted benches with storage space, known as chest benches. The front is painted in warm colors with heartwarming motifs. Veneer painting was chosen as the background for this softwood bench, and the flowers and hearts were set within frames. On the lid, which is secured with wrought-iron bands, only traces of the painting remain. Delicate flowers, the owner’s initials, and the year of creation – 177. – were painted on the base board. Furniture was almost always given as a gift to women, usually on their wedding day. This painted bench from the last third of the 18th century is a charming piece of provincial furniture that brings joy.
