The farmhouse chest has a powerful presence. It is at least 300 years old and comes from Styria. The surface is covered with a paste painting technique – sometimes clearly visible and sometimes indistinct. The colors range from reddish brown to black. Irregularities in pattern and color create the look we love in antique furniture. The base board is also worth mentioning, as its lower edge is equally irregular and thus has a significant effect. In terms of construction, the farmer’s chest is a side-stollen chest with five panels framed by profiled strips. The special feature of this chest is its wooden lock and wooden straps; only the key blade and the key are made of metal. The wooden lock is primitive in the best sense of the word. A flexible wooden splint is responsible for the tension, otherwise everything that is usually made of metal is made of wood. The chest is a rarity!
