The Mariazell farmer’s chest gets its name from the Mariazell depiction of Mary with the baby Jesus. Here, Mary and the baby Jesus are wearing golden crowns, the baby Jesus is sitting on Mary’s right arm, and Mary is wearing a blue overdress with a red inner dress and a golden coat over it. This depiction is located in the center panel, which is defined by a profiled, smoothly shaped frame. Mary and the baby Jesus are surrounded by flowers and leaves. These flowers can be found in the bouquets in the other two panels. Another common feature is the motif of the spandrels. Delicate flowers and leaves are painted there, which were also chosen as the motif for the upper crossbar of the farmer’s chest. The Mariazell chest enchants with its delicate, fine motifs and its wonderful color scheme of green, red, and ocher. A Styrian chest from the early 19th century that delights the heart.
