This farmhouse chest from Styria certainly dates from the early 18th century, although the side panels bear the date “1833.” This phenomenon is not uncommon; existing pieces of furniture were often decorated at a later date. The simple side-stollen chest originally had its front divided into panels and was decorated with paste painting approximately 100 years later. In addition to the year, the motifs consist mainly of stylized trees of life. The triangular strips applied to the central panels pleasantly break up the front and are integrated into the painting technique. Evidence of the chest’s great age includes the noteworthy wooden bands and its conical shape. The lock and key work perfectly. A very special farmhouse chest that is sure to find its special place.
