The farmhouse cabinet from Styria served as a carrier for the creativity of its painter. The design of the surface covers all sides of the cabinet and follows a concept. Fields were created through frames. The frames were emphasized differently, the fields were given ornaments. The peasant cabinet shows two levels in the painting: one is restrained in color in the technique of paste painting and fine in the elaboration. The arrangement of the motifs follows a geometric pattern. The other level introduces an artistic, random element and defines the two central fields and three small fields on the body. Floral motifs are recognizable here. Color is used here. The painting of the drawer is a mixture of the two levels. Overall, we find a muted color canon. In terms of construction, the farmer’s cabinet is a side gallery cupboard with beveled pilaster strips, a profiled cornice and a discreetly contoured plinth. The center of the cabinet is decorated with an IHS monogram, which also indicates the year of origin. The various numbers are a mystery. We can be sure that the folk art cabinet dates from the first half of the 19th century. The farmer’s cabinet is a very interesting, multi-layered piece of furniture with a great patina!
