This peasant chest is a wonderful example of stylized peasant painting. The depiction of the flowers and leaves is atypical, and that of Mary and the infant Jesus with the delicate little trees also has the expression of modern aesthetics. The background of the three fields is just as special. I find that it brings three-dimensionality to the picture, although the motifs rely exclusively on two-dimensionality.
