The farmer’s armoire from the early 19th century has an unmistakable surface design. On the one hand, there is the bold paste painting that runs across the entire armoire and, on the other, the expressive figural painting of the panels. The painting has been revised. The upper panel depicts St. George and St. Martin in great detail. The lower panel depicts a Turkish emperor and a female warrior. I would love to know who this brave fighter was. In terms of construction, the farmer’s armoire is a cleat construction with a simple, elegant cornice and a beautifully curved plinth board that echoes the waves of the paste painting. The iron hinges, lock and key are in keeping with the period and style of the armoire.
